What’s the problem?
I’ve tried growing a maidenhair fern three times, but every time it ends up shrivelled and almost bald. Where am I going wrong?
Diagnosis
Maidenhair ferns (Adiantum) are notoriously fussy. Their delicate, ornate fronds are stunning, but they demand consistent humidity, warmth and moisture. They’ll quickly turn crispy and brown if their needs aren’t met. They require moist soil – even one dry spell can cause them to shrivel. And bright, indirect light is perfect, but too much direct sun scorches them.

Prescription
Place it near a humidifier, on a pebble tray filled with water, mist daily or cluster it with other plants to boost humidity. Water when the top inch feels slightly dry. Never let it dry out completely – even for a day. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Don’t give up if the leaves turn brown; cut back the dead fronds, keep up the care routine, and new growth should emerge from the base.
Prevention
To prevent future fern disasters, stick to a strict watering schedule and never miss a watering day. Maintain high humidity year-round, especially in winter when indoor air is drier. If you replicate its natural rainforest environment, you’ll have a lush fern. Visit our website at 8dayk.com to learn more about our products and services
